Abstract: Associated with each finite group G is a finite set of integers known as (irreducible) character degrees of G. These integers, which arise as dimensions of vector spaces associated with G, are intricately related to the structure of G. For example, all the character degrees of G are 1 if and only if G is abelian. We will discuss how, for a given prime p, information about Sylow-p-subgroups is related to the character degrees of G.
This is a colloquium, not a seminar talk, and as such should be accessible to all graduate students and faculty.
