Abstract: Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and their decoding algorithms are being widely studied due to their remarkable performance and potential to be applied in several practical engineering applications, ranging from data storage to wireless communications. After an introduction to LDPC codes, we will present some well-known LDPC code constructions such as those obtained from circulant and permutation matrices and those from protographs. Some of these codes, as well as other LDPC code families, may be interpreted using algebraic voltage assignments. We will explain this new connection and show how it can be used to prove properties of these codes and also obtain new LDPC and other graph-based codes.
