Abstract: The real numbers are a completion of the rational numbers, in the sense that we attach to the rationals limits of Cauchy sequences under the usual absolute value metric. In this talk, we discuss a different metric, called the "p-adic metric", one can impose on the rationals. The corresponding completion forms a new set of numbers called the "p-adic numbers". We will look at properties of p-adic numbers and how they differ from the real numbers.
