UCC approves Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Statistics

The Ohio University Curriculum Council has approved a new major in "Mathematical Statistics". Students in the program will complete a rigorous series of courses in the mathematical foundations, methodolgies and applications of Statistics. The major will be open to both new and transfer students in the Fall of 2009. While the field of statistics is necessarily mathematical in nature, the term Mathematical Statistician is a job classification denoting a stronger mathematical background than a "Statistician". The average salary for a Mathematical Statisticians in the federal government was $85,690 in 2007. Besides in the federal government, statisticians are employed in a large number of state, educational, industrial, non-profit and business enterprises.
