Internships, CPT, OPT
Information on doing on internships and related visa issues.
Internships
Students in certain tracks in the Master's program can fulfill the professional development requirement by doing an internship. If you choose to do an internship, then it becomes an integral part of your study plan. Your adviser will help you determine what kind of job is suitable, and may be able to help you find such a job.
You and your adviser will together determine an appropriate length for your internship, from a minimum of one quarter to a maximum of one year. Although work experience is beneficial, it cannot be allowed to distract you from the timely completion of your degree. (A full year internship under CPT also affects eligibility for OPT for F-1 international students.)
Register for the Internship course (MATH 598) each quarter. Near the end of the quarter, have your supervisor send a letter to the official instructor for MATH 598. The letter should state when you started work, when you finish (or that you are continuing), and that they are satisfied with your work. It is best if this letter is received before classes finish, so your grade (CR) can be submitted on time.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is an employment authorization for F-1 international students that allows them to work off campus in order to do an internship. It can only be used by students for whom the internship fulfills a requirement for their program. See the CPT information from International Student and Faculty Services for how and when to apply. Give a copy of your application to the Math department for our records.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is another employment authorization for F-1 international students to work off campus. It is not, however, generally used for an internship. In general, it allows you to work for one year after finishing your degree requirements. You can apply for it whether or not you have a job offer. It is essential that your application is complete several weeks before you have finished the program requirements. See the OPT information from International Student and Faculty Services for how and when to apply. OPT can also be used to work during vacations. Give a copy of your application to the Math department for our records.
