This major is intended for those interested in rigorous training in mathematics and a mathematically intensive career. It is appropriate for those preparing to enter graduate school in the mathematical sciences.
Program Requirements
For a B.S. in mathematics, a student must complete a total of at least 60 hours of MATH courses. These must include:
- The following courses (48 hours):
- MATH 211 - Elementary Linear Algebra (or MATH 410 - Matrix Theory)
- MATH 263A-D - Calculus I-IV (or MATH266A,B and MATH 263C,D.)
- MATH 308 - Discrete Math
- MATH 314 - Elementary Abstract Algebra (or MATH 413A)
- MATH 340 - Differential Equations
- MATH 350 - Probability
- MATH 411 - Linear Algebra
- MATH 470 - Complex Variables
- MATH 460A - Advanced Calculus I
- At least 3 elective MATH courses, numbered above 300. See the course offerings
and talk with an advisor about possible choices of electives.
Note: These requirements went into effect for students entering Fall 2009. Students who entered earlier should see the old requirements.
The following schedule is recommended for students entering the program in the freshman year. However, this is only a recommendation and those entering the program later or with AP credit can easily make adjustments.
