Winter 2009 MATH 263A Calculus I Sections A03 and A04
MATLAB Information
In this course, we will be making extensive use of MATLAB, a computer program for mathematical computing, visualization, and programming. The program is installed on computers in numerous public computing sites. A list of some of the sites may be found at the following link: (MATLAB sites). Each of the six homework assignments for the course includes a portion to be done with MATLAB. The homework assignments are listed on the
web page for Winter 2009 MATH 263A Calculus I, Sections A03 and A04
. The six corresponding MATLAB project are listed below. The set of skills that a student will acquire in each project is indicated.
MATLAB 1: (Part of Assigned Homework 1) Creating Graphs for Exercise 1.4#28
Skills include:
- defining variables and functions
- graphing a function on a specified domain
- changing the line style of a graph
- graphing more than one function on the same set of axes
- adjusting the scale of the axes of a graph
- adding text arrows and titles to graphs
MATLAB 2: (Part of Assigned Homework 2) Using MATLAB to check derivatives
Skills include:
- using MATLAB to differentiate a function
- using MATLAB to simplify an answer
MATLAB 3: (Part of Assigned Homework 3) Using MATLAB to create a graph for Homework 3 Problem [1]
Skills include:
- using MATLAB to highlight a single point
MATLAB 6: (Part of Assigned Homework 6) Using MATLAB to create a drawing for Homework 6 Problem [2]
You will use MATLAB skills that you learned in earlier projects to produce a drawing with the following features:
- Three functions graphed on the same set of axes
- Some graphs drawn solid; some drawn dashed
- Key points highlighted with appropriately-sized dots
- Curves labeled with their corresponding functions; key points labeled with their (x,y) coordinates
- Drawing titled
The instructions for this project will not tell you how to do these things. If you have forgotten how to do any of them, review your earlier MATLAB projects to refresh your memory.
