Textbook: Elements of Modern Algebra, 6th Edition, by Gilbert and Gilbert, Brooks-Cole, 2005. ISBN: 0-534-40464-X. Please note that the 7th edition of this book is already available. However, I decided to go with the 6th Edition to give you a last chance to get something from the used book market if you so desire.

Evaluation: Homework will be assigned periodically.  However you do not have to turn it in, as it would be impossible for me to grade it and return it to you promptly.  However, you are advised to keep up with it as a way to pace yourself and stay up with the course.  You are also encouraged to keep a notebook that will be subject to periodical review and might be a source of extra credit. In addition, there will be two extra-credit projects. Your grade will be based on three examinations: two partials and a final. Each partial is worth 30 points of your grade and the final is worth 25 points. The credit for the extra-credit projects and the notebook will add up to 15 points.

Letter grades will be assigned according to the following distribution:

                                              D-: [50,53) D: [53,57) D+: [57,60)
                                              C-: [60,65) C: [65,70) C+: [70,75)
                                              B-: [75,80) B: [80,85) B+: [85,90)
                                              A-: [90,93) A: [93,100]

Cheating Policy: Cheating will not be tolerated.  Penalties may extend to the failure of the course.
