COURSE CONTENT:
Optimization of functions subject to equality and inequality constraints. Formulation of linear programming problems and solutions by the simplex method. Related topics such as sensitivity analysis, duality and network programming. Applications of linear programming. Introduction to nonlinear programming techniques.
TEXTBOOK (not required):
Introduction to Operations Research, by Frederick Hillier and Gerald Lieberman, eighth edition.
PREREQUISITES:
Math 211 or 410 & 263D for undergraduates; Math 510 for graduates (or permission from instructor).
GRADING:
Two preliminary tests worth 20% each, final exam worth 40% of your final mark.
Homework 15%, class participation 5% . Extra credit can be earned from a course project.
Final grades will be determined from the following scale: 85+ A, 70+ B, 55+ C, 45+ D.
CHEATING:
Don't. The penalty may be an F for the course.
ATTENDANCE:
Strongly recommended.
HOMEWORK:
There will be about 5 homework assignments. Only selected homework problems will be collected and graded.
